A Research Request
Dear Intertronic Communicator,
A writer (that's me) is beginning a Research Phase and is requesting Real Stories of True Horror.
To wit: I am seeking information on gunshot wounds—actual gunshot wounds, not the strangely survivable scratches that occur in films. I need detailed info on GSWs that have been non-fatal to the victim (a vegetative state does not count for my purposes); any details you can provide, or resources you can point me to that I would understand with only basic understanding of the human body, would be appreciated. Yes, gore is absolutely acceptable, even invited, so please do not be afraid to shock me; I just want to get my physics right rather than trust either Hollywood or TVTropes to be steering me in the right direction.
And before there is concern about spoilers: no, this is not for a specific project; a specific project triggered it, but mostly it stems from my realization that I'm not sure what kind of ballistic punishment a piece of meat about our size can sustain and survive, nor what sort of state it'll be in afterward.
Your assistance in this most important and grisly matter is appreciated.
Sincerely,

For the record, those strangely survivable scratches do happen in real life - my father actually experienced it.
My dad shot his leg while holstering a gun. The bullet traveled INSIDE his left leg from thigh past knee into calf.
My brother, on the other hand, managed to saw off half his thumb.
I grew up with a guy with only half a hand, as witness to what happens when you let the firecracker go off while it's being held.
Both my father and my boyfriend survived horrific fires as children - dad's was a house fire, boyfriend's was .. well.. you should ask him.
Or were you only looking for GSWs?
@Kijeren: Currently just GSWs, but those are all helpful, too! Gunshots are the current thing I was interested in, but more general stories of the kinds of punishment we can survive (and the things that happen to us when we do). Your stories are definitely valuable! I'm going to guess, though, that it's not the default result for a bullet to hug the inside of a body part like that (I've heard of it happening with attempts to commit suicide by headshot, too—the bullet hugs the inside of one's skull and results in a gaping hole but no kill-shot to the brain).
Fortunately, or unfortunately for your research's purposes, I have never been shot. I have however shot my friend's shooting pants(made with really thick material) with an air rifle to see if it would travel all the way through. It did. This helps you in no way, but I wanted to leave a comment and that's all I could think of.
